Pet market mobilizes to meet demand for sustainability

Adaptation is made with an eye on the 73% of consumers who are willing to change habits due to environmental impact

Growing concerns about sustainability have led pet industry companies to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their production. According to a Nielsen study, 73% of global consumers are willing to change their consumption habits to reduce their environmental impact. This and other surveys have been driving the market, which is adapting to meet the needs of its customers. The industry responsible for pet products and services is no different.

One of the main initiatives is the replacement of plastic or more durable compositions with recyclable alternatives. Great Pet recently adopted this practice and launched a hygienic granule for cats made from rice husks. The byproduct, which is a natural part of rice production, helps reduce waste and decomposition time, as it is biodegradable.

Another example comes from Royal Canin, which is implementing energy efficiency initiatives to neutralize carbon emissions in its production. The company’s actions include the use of electric vehicles, intelligent delivery routing, and the use of biofuel in vehicles for logistics operations. For Carla Pistori, the brand’s Director of Corporate Affairs in Brazil, this is part of creating a complete ecosystem. “We are committed to being a company that creates value not only for pets, but also for people and the planet. We produce high-quality food for cats and dogs, training our employees and partners, while also seeking to ensure a sustainable future for future generations,” she says.

A company that also seeks environmental responsibility in the creation of its products is empóriopet®, which since 2005 has been dedicated to creating solutions that use raw materials from Brazilian biodiversity and promote environmentally friendly practices. The brand’s traditional BB Cream, which is a shampoo for cats, contains a formula produced with ingredients of certified organic origin and with vegetable extracts and oils, completely free of salt, parabens, formaldehyde or chlorine. “Our commitment to the quality and well-being of pets has driven us to create solutions that not only care for, but also respect the animal’s nature”, explains Ana Paula Quintela, Commercial Manager and partner at empóriopet®.

In addition to internal practices, some companies partner with conservation initiatives, such as Confort Pet. The company uses shipping packaging made from 100% recycled materials and carries out the reverse logistics process for all of its product packaging through the Eu Reciclo institute. The process involves a set of actions that allocate and enable the collection or return of waste for reuse.

All bale packaging is still made from recycled materials, as explained by Bruno Dametto, the company’s director. “The National Reverse Logistics Plan for Packaging provides for a mandatory minimum percentage of recovery per product, and we go above and beyond that. For every product sold by Confort Pet, a package is recycled.”

Guilherme Martinez, head of PET South America, the main trade show for the pet industry in Latin America, where all these brands will showcase their products, explains that examples like these are increasingly common at the event. “Every year, companies’ concern for the environment grows. This chain of adoption of sustainable practices in the sector not only meets the growing demand from consumers for ecological products, but also contributes to a greener future,” he says. Soon, he guarantees, the exception will be the company that does not take this type of care.

PET South America takes place between August 14th and 16th, at São Paulo Expo, and presents the market with the latest releases and trends in the pet market.
