NürnbergMesse announces optimistic outlook for 2024

Among the world’s largest event organizers, the company expects record sales of around 340 million euros this year

After the COVID-induced slump in previous years, NürnbergMesse is back on the path to growth in 2023. Under the leadership of a new Executive Board established in August, the company generated an estimated revenue of 250 million euros, the second highest for an odd-numbered fiscal year, when the industry typically holds fewer events. Compared to 2021, the group achieved substantial gains not only in visitor numbers (315,000 in 2021 vs. 1.3 million in 2023), but also in the number of exhibitors (2021: 5,500 vs. 2023: 28,000) and exhibition space (2021: 176,000 m2 vs. 2023: 894,000 m2).

For the first time since the pandemic, in 2023 all markets except China saw trade shows return to their regular dates. Events in Nuremberg, such as the IT security trade show it-sa Expo&Congress, and guest events such as Consumenta, showed particularly exceptional growth rates. The Nuremberg Exhibition Centre will host an average of 1.5 events per week in 2023, totaling 80 events with almost 860,000 visitors and more than 20,000 exhibitors on over 644,000 m2 of space. In other countries, a strong second half of the year at the subsidiaries in Brazil, Greece and India made a particularly important contribution to the success of the year.

The outlook for 2024 is promising, as thanks to the strong growth of the Group, NürnbergMesse is expecting a new sales record of around 340 million euros. In addition, this year the company will celebrate its 50th anniversary and, thanks to its successful internationalization in recent years, the 15th anniversary of its subsidiaries in Milan and São Paulo.

After implementing systematic cost management during the pandemic, NürnbergMesse will seek to strengthen its product portfolio in 2024 and invest in improving its performance.

Sustainable space

Parts of the Group’s exhibition centre have been standing since the company was founded in 1974. To make its arena fit for the future, NürnbergMesse plans to invest more than 50 million euros in infrastructure this year. The focus will be on customer service and sustainability. A major contribution will come from plans to make the energy supply carbon-neutral by 2028. NürnbergMesse expects to complete the first phase of its hybrid energy supply by September this year. At that point, the company will be supplied with green solar energy by a total of 21,000 photovoltaic modules in seven halls and a car park.

Another investment target is a new employee building at the entrance to the NCC Mitte. The existing building will be renovated to lay the foundations in 2024 for modern and sustainable working and office environments under the title “NXT74” – referring to the 50th anniversary of NürnbergMesse’s founding, but also to the aspiration for new chapters of success. “Our business results in 2023, which were a significant improvement on our original projections, and our expected record sales in 2024 will give us the necessary impetus for concentrated investments in personnel, events, a sustainable exhibition center and digitalization/IT. This will make NürnbergMesse fully future-ready,” concludes Dirk Blum, Senior Vice President Finance and Facilities.

Digitalization

Another focus for NürnbergMesse’s investments in 2024 will be the systematic digitalization of its products and services. The aim is to optimize and expand e-commerce. In addition to expanding customer-centric IT systems, another goal will be to expand the digital product offering to strengthen the relevance and reach of event brands. “We want to make it even easier for our customers to use our products and services. That is why we are systematically developing our digital product range to meet all types of customer needs – online and on-site,” explains Dr. Martin Kassubek, Senior Vice President Business Development.
